Shoulder stiffness

I would like to deal with frozen shoulder as a separate topic on our website because we have been able to help a great many people who have dealt with this issue for years.

The cause of frozen shoulder is still not exactly clear in conventional medicine. There is an inflammatory reaction of the joint mucosa and in this context soft material is deposited, which leads to thickening of the joint capsule and reduction of its elasticity. As a result, mobility decreases and the joint “freezes”. This is where the English name Frozen Shoulder comes from.

Frozen shoulder can occur after any kind of trauma to the shoulder joint. For example, after an accident, a bone fracture or even after an operation with subsequent resting posture. In some cases, however, frozen shoulder occurs spontaneously and without any apparent trigger.

Typically, frozen shoulder affects women more often between the ages of 45 and 55. However, an increased occurrence is also observed in connection with metabolic disorders such as thyroid diseases, diabetes mellitus or lipometabolic disorders.

You probably have frozen shoulder if:

– the shoulder pain is very severe or worsens over time
– the shoulder pain does not subside within a few weeks – then there is a risk that it will become chronic
– the pain in the shoulder keeps recurring
– You had an accident, such as a fall on the shoulder or arm
– Your shoulder and arm are stiff and mobility is limited
– the shoulder pain radiates to the neck, head, arm or wrist
– Onset of sensory disturbances and insensations, for example numbness, tingling or formication

In conventional medicine, cortisone is injected into the shoulder joint with a needle. As an undesirable side effect, general reactions such as heart palpitations or a rise in blood pressure and, in the case of diabetes, a rise in blood glucose levels may occur.
In addition, anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs) and vitamin C preparations are used. Another part of the therapy are physiotherapeutic measures, which have to be applied for months.

From a chiropractic perspective, the problem is looked at in a different way; it is not about suppressing the symptom itself, but finding the cause.
The focus is not primarily the shoulder joint, but the spine. Now you ask yourself what the spine has to do with frozen shoulder. The nervous system that connects our brain to our body runs through the spine. Now, when vertebral bodies are in a vertebral misalignment, the nervous system is impaired in its function. This in turn has the consequence that muscles and soft tissues do not work together and thus the movement of a joint, in our case the shoulder, cannot proceed in a coordinated manner. By precisely discussing the vertebral misalignment with the thermography method, the experienced chiropractor can make the correction. Partial to complete improvement in shoulder joint mobility is visible in a few days to weeks.
